内容简介:

Errors are ubiquitous at work. Studies have shown errors to lead to positive outcomes (e.g., innovation) and negative outcomes (e.g., stress), but they did not explain how errors can shape individuals’ psychological processes and facilitate these different outcomes. Drawing on appraisal theory and temporal construal theory, our research predicted that appraising error as pleasant weakens the positive relationship between current impact appraisal of error and affective rumination, which then gives rise to emotional exhaustion. Our research also predicted that appraising error as pleasant strengthens the relationship between future impact appraisal of error and problem solving pondering, which then promotes creative behaviors. Using a repeated sampling approach, we collected 1017 within-person observations from members of entrepreneurial teams in Asia on their psychological processes and behaviors in weeks which they indicated an error occurrence, and we found support for both sets of predictions. Our research contributes to a more advanced understanding of errors, by showing in a single study that appraising error occurrences as pleasant vs unpleasant on different temporal frames determines if errors are more likely to result in positive and/or negative outcomes.
